Monthly Recap – May

monthly recap

Books Read: 6
Genres Read: Fantasy, Historical Fiction, YA, historical non-fiction

Top Pick: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Genre: Fantasy
4.5 stars.

This was not a difficult choice for me, though it did come down to a clash between two unique, exquisitely written fantasy novels. It is so hard to find fantasy novels that are different than the Tolkien-esque norm, something no one else has ever attempted. Both Neverwhere and Strange the Dreamer did just that. Yet, in the end, Gaiman’s prose is more well put together, as is the story, and even the setting. Gaiman has a way of presenting a complex, counter-intuative world in a delightfully simple way that immerses the reader in a way Taylor’s complexities just didn’t quite do for me.

Runner-up: Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
